Sacrificing the Sacrifice

Sacrificing by Luciana B. VeitWhat you are sacrificing right now when reading this chronicle?

Are your bored and forgotten small kids crying, or are the bigger ones getting celebrity culture education watching TV?

Shouldn’t you be writing that report for work instead of wasting some of your precious time?

Your home is run down and the bad smell is everywhere, coming even from your own skin. But hygiene can wait – you say.

Could it be that you are not sacrificing anything at all at this precise moment? Well, this is a matter of point of view, is it not?

But of course you are sacrificing something or someone for things that are not worth fighting for. But yet again, you might say: the point of view, remember?

You neither eat candy nor fried chicken just to keep your slim and sensational figure, even though taking a bite of a doughnut or of a Big Mac is one of your favourite pleasures in life. Is it worth sacrificing a delicious treat that comes quickly through your lips, for that which stays forever on your hips?

You do not have a big circle of friends just to dedicate to your own person in the little free time you have, doing what you want and when you want. Is it worth sacrificing friendship?

As a mother or a father you must sometimes leave your hands off your kids just to let them learn to find their own steps in this world. Is it worth sacrificing your parental protection?

You sacrifice your freedom for security. Is it worth it?

You sacrifice shopping sprees only to travel more frequently. What is more valuable, experiences that last a lifetime or goods that you can show off and maybe pass on to your relatives once you are gone?

Soldiers sacrifice their lives for their countries. Is this worth dying for?

Religious freaks, skinheads and ultranationalists sacrifice their souls in the name of false ideals. Is it worth sacrificing your human side to fight for something that you don’t really understand, just to show the world the type of person you are not?

And what about those who sacrifice their own existence for the needy for love, food, for shelter and for education? Is it worth sacrificing your trip for this life if you do not keep to your own path, maybe afraid to look inside of yourself? Or by helping others you believe that are already living your life according to your expectations?

Is it worth suffering only to satisfy someone else, no matter how dear this person is to you? Is it worth bringing suffering to others, even if they are your worst enemies, so that you can feel satisfied?

Quite sincerely, I think that each one of us should be in position to find our own answers, because I am only here to make you think about these questions.

But still I find that a good guide is your pillow. If it lets you sleep at night, you are good. If not, you might be struggling with a silent war that you aren’t even aware of.
